Landers is an unincorporated community in San Bernardino County, California, located in the Homestead Valley of the southeastern Mojave Desert. The area sits at a nominal elevation of about 3,100 feet, with Goat Mountain rising several hundred feet above the surrounding basin. Landers lies roughly 14 miles north of Yucca Valley and shares its high-desert landscape with the nearby communities of Joshua Tree to the southeast, Flamingo Heights to the south, and Johnson Valley to the north. The community grew from the desert homestead movement of the mid-twentieth century, when small parcels drew settlers seeking space, solitude, and inexpensive land far from the coastal cities. That homestead character persists today in the scattered cabins, mid-century homes, and large open lots that define the area, many of them ringed by Joshua trees and creosote. Landers became widely known through its association with aerospace engineer and ufologist George Van Tassel, who built the Integratron under nearby Giant Rock and made the community a gathering point for UFO conventions and seekers through the 1950s and the decades that followed. That distinctive history still colors the community's identity. The Integratron now operates as a destination for sound baths and tours, drawing visitors from across the region and beyond, and the area continues to attract artists, musicians, and people drawn to the desert's quiet, its dark night skies, and its distance from urban life. Local culture is decentralized and low-key, connected to the arts and music scenes of nearby Joshua Tree and Pioneertown rather than to a single commercial center. Today Landers remains sparsely populated, with roughly 2,700 residents spread across a broad landscape of Joshua trees, creosote, and rocky outcrops. Residents rely on Yucca Valley for daily shopping, schools, and services, while Joshua Tree National Park provides an expansive natural backyard just minutes to the south. The combination of homestead heritage, desert solitude, and proximity to one of the country's most visited national parks makes Landers a distinctive and increasingly recognized corner of the Morongo Basin.
