San Gabriel Valley Culinary Hub

About Monterey Park, CA

Welcome to Monterey Park, a western San Gabriel Valley city known as one of America's first suburban Chinese-American communities, with celebrated dining and quick freeway access to downtown Los Angeles.

Monterey Park is a city in Los Angeles County, California, in the western San Gabriel Valley about eight miles east of downtown Los Angeles. It is bounded by the 710 Freeway on the west, the 10 Freeway on the north, and the 60 Freeway on the south, giving it unusually convenient access to both downtown and the surrounding valley. Its population was 61,096 at the 2020 census. The city's story is closely tied to immigration and demographic change. Monterey Park began as a community of white and Mexican settlers and Japanese farmers, and by the 1950s it was sometimes called the "Mexican Beverly Hills." Beginning in the 1970s and 1980s, it became a destination for Chinese and other Asian immigrants, earning recognition as one of America's first suburban Chinese-American communities. In 1983, Lily Lee Chen became the city's first Chinese-American mayor. Today the city is predominantly Asian American, with a substantial Latino population. That heritage is most visible in the city's food culture. Monterey Park is a celebrated dining destination, with a dense concentration of Chinese and pan-Asian restaurants, dim sum houses, bakeries, and large Asian supermarkets along corridors such as Atlantic Boulevard and Garvey Avenue. Residents and visitors alike come for its culinary offerings. Public schools are served by several districts — chiefly the Alhambra Unified School District for most of the city, with portions served by the Garvey, Los Angeles, and Montebello districts — and East Los Angeles College is located within the city. Barnes Park, an 11-acre park at the center of town, provides a community center, sports courts, an amphitheater, and picnic areas. The result is a mature, food-centered suburb with deep community roots, strong institutions, and a location that keeps the entire Los Angeles region within easy reach.

City Guide

About Monterey Park

Real Estate & Housing

Monterey Park's housing stock is typical of the older San Gabriel Valley: a mix of mid-century single-family homes, postwar bungalows, and ranch-style houses on compact lots, with a smaller share of condominiums, townhomes, and apartment buildings along its commercial corridors. Many neighborhoods are fully built out, and the city's mature tree-lined streets reflect its development during the mid-twentieth century. As the community's demographics shifted over recent decades, housing turned over steadily among established neighborhoods, and infill and modest remodels have updated the stock. The city's central location, strong restaurant scene, and freeway access make its housing appealing to a wide range of buyers, from first-time purchasers to multigenerational families.

Neighborhoods

Monterey Park's neighborhoods radiate from its commercial corridors and parks. The Atlantic Boulevard corridor is the city's main commercial spine, lined with restaurants, markets, and businesses, while Garvey Avenue and Garfield Avenue carry additional dining and retail. Barnes Park, an 11-acre green space at the city's heart, anchors the surrounding residential streets. The hillside areas on the city's north and east edges offer some larger homes and views, while the flatter southern sections hold the older postwar subdivisions. Because the city is largely built out and bordered by three freeways, its neighborhoods are established and walkable in places, with a continuous mix of homes, apartments, and storefronts rather than large master-planned developments.

Lifestyle in Monterey Park

Monterey Park is defined by its food and its community. The city is one of the most celebrated dining destinations in the San Gabriel Valley, with a dense concentration of Chinese, Taiwanese, Vietnamese, and pan-Asian restaurants, dim sum houses, bakeries, and large Asian supermarkets along Atlantic Boulevard, Garvey Avenue, and surrounding streets. The community is predominantly Asian American, with a substantial Latino population and a deep immigrant story, and civic life reflects that blend through cultural events, restaurants, and community organizations. Barnes Park anchors recreation in the center of town, and East Los Angeles College adds a student presence. The result is a vibrant, food-centered suburb with strong neighborhood institutions and a distinctly international character.

Schools & Education

Monterey Park's public schools span several districts, a legacy of its central location at the junction of multiple school systems. The Alhambra Unified School District serves most of the city for grades K-12, with additional portions served by the Garvey, Los Angeles, and Montebello districts, so school assignment depends on a home's specific address. East Los Angeles College, a community college within the Los Angeles Community College District, is located in Monterey Park and offers transfer programs and career education. Because of the multi-district structure, families considering the city should verify which district and schools a particular address feeds into.

Getting Around

Monterey Park sits at a well-connected corner of the Los Angeles freeway network. The 710 Freeway bounds it on the west, the 10 Freeway on the north, and the 60 Freeway on the south, providing direct routes to downtown Los Angeles, the San Gabriel Valley, and points east and south. Downtown Los Angeles is about eight miles away. The Cal State LA Metrolink station and transit center lie just west of the city, offering regional rail and bus connections, and local bus routes serve the city's main corridors. This freeway and transit access makes Monterey Park a practical base for commuters working across the Los Angeles basin.

Parks & Recreation

Monterey Park's recreation centers on Barnes Park, an 11-acre park at the heart of the city with a community center, basketball gym, amphitheater, picnic pavilion, lighted softball field, and tennis and pickleball courts. The city's Recreation and Community Services Department offers a range of programs and activities for residents of all ages. Beyond the city, the western San Gabriel Valley and its foothills provide additional parks and trails, and the nearby 10, 60, and 710 freeways make regional destinations, from the San Gabriel Mountains to downtown Los Angeles, easily reachable. The city's compact parks and active recreation programming keep local outdoor and social activities close to home.
