Santa Clarita Valley Community
Welcome to Saugus, one of four communities that merged to form Santa Clarita, where the Santa Clarita Valley's ranching heritage meets family-friendly suburban neighborhoods.
Saugus is a community in northern Los Angeles County, California, occupying the central and north-central portion of the city of Santa Clarita. It is one of four historic communities — Saugus, Newhall, Valencia, and Canyon Country — that merged in 1987 to incorporate Santa Clarita, and it remains a distinct neighborhood identity within the larger city. The name comes from Saugus, Massachusetts, the hometown of Henry Mayo Newhall, the businessman whose landholdings shaped the Santa Clarita Valley. Saugus carries much of the valley's early heritage. The area grew around ranching, agriculture, and the railroad, and the 1888 Saugus Train Station survives today at the Santa Clarita History Center, located within William S. Hart Regional Park. That park, centered on the former estate of silent-film actor William S. Hart, preserves the valley's western character and hosts events including the Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival and the Hart of the West Pow Wow. Residentially, Saugus is built primarily on mid-to-late twentieth-century suburban development, with established single-family neighborhoods along the Bouquet Canyon, Plum Canyon, and Seco Canyon corridors and newer homes on the hillsides. Public education is split between the Saugus Union School District for elementary grades and the William S. Hart Union High School District for secondary grades, which operates Saugus High School in the community. Transportation centers on State Route 14, the Antelope Valley Freeway, with Interstate 5 a short distance west and Metrolink's Antelope Valley Line stopping at the Santa Clarita station. City of Santa Clarita Transit provides local bus service. For recreation, residents draw on William S. Hart Park, Central Park, and the valley's extensive trail system, with Six Flags Magic Mountain and the amenities of Valencia nearby. Saugus offers a family-centered, historically rooted way of life within one of Los Angeles County's larger suburban cities.

City Guide
Saugus is built largely on mid-to-late twentieth-century residential development, with established tract-home subdivisions of single-family houses and a smaller share of townhomes and condominiums. Neighborhoods line the Bouquet Canyon, Plum Canyon, and Seco Canyon corridors, with newer construction continuing on the community's edges. Homes typically sit on suburban lots with driveways and yards, and many developments include community parks or trail access. Compared with the master-planned Valencia, Saugus has a more traditional, hillside-suburban character with a mix of home ages and styles.
